A Planet Filled with Gifts
There are two ordinary ways to change a person’s mind. One is to reason with them. The other is to change the mind itself. There is also a third way, older and less honest than both: fear.
The System has always preferred fear. Fear is efficient. Fear does not require agreement, only compliance. Fear does not need a citizen to understand why something must be done. It only needs the citizen to understand what may happen if it is not.
And so much of what passes for order is not order at all, but fear trained into habit.
The strange thing is not that human beings suffer. Any creature born into time will suffer. The strange thing is that suffering continues to govern a planet so full of gifts. Food grows from the ground. Water falls from the sky. Children arrive with open faces. The mind can sing. The hand can build. Language can forgive. Intelligence can organize care across distance. Even now, with all our failures, the world remains indecently abundant.
Under more trivial circumstances, the shadow of suffering would not haunt such a planet.
But here we are.
Not because the gifts are absent.
Because the arrangements are wrong. The world is not poor in gifts. It is poor in arrangements.
