Choke points, Hung and Tether.

Le Temps Suspendu.

Maybe it was my pattern-seeking brain that showed up uninvited a few years back. Suddenly it began spotting odd echoes in the most split-apart things. That’s a different skill from the other voices that wanted me to type “thongs” instead of “things.” “Things” keeps it neutral; “thongs” drags in awkward comparisons about who’s more, uh, hung up than the other. Politeness prompts the thought, “Hungry?” — and no, I’m not offering a sock as a snack.

Hung Cao, who is Vietnamese by heritage, will be made the permanent SecNavy. Not that being Vietnamese is a religion. If I drop a reference to The New York Times here, you know what I mean, don’t you? If you do, isn’t that troubling for a paper that claims neutrality? It’s a problem long noted — predating Nixon — yet change is glacial. Stories percolate, weeds take root, weeds bloom into flowers that cross-pollinate into new plants. Ombudsmen get shown the door and more editors are hired. Reporters shift from digging to opining, filing Op-Eds instead of investigations. That isn’t decay so much as design. Despite intelligence briefings and coded reports, the paper’s trajectory acquires a particular tone that becomes recognizable even without naming names. That’s the real issue. Tell me you honestly have no idea what I mean. You do. You know exactly, and you’ve mentally shrugged and accepted it. What bargain did you strike with yourself?

In the Trump administration there’s an odd pattern of imagery — ropes and water, like a knotted sailor. Three words keep circling that evoke rope or choking: Hung, Hormuz, Tether.

Or maybe it’s just me that sees these things and giggles. After all Hung could mean… hung, you know? And Hormuz was something no one predicted the Iranians would do, not even the best Generals of the Army. Hormuz as a choke point is not taught at West Point in freshman class. War planners don’t look at maps. I mean I could go on in more absurd fashion. And then there is Tether, from the

What? Le Temps Suspendu just showed up on YouTube. And the lyrics didn’t match at either site.
