How we live - Shenzen (Fudian District).

I get a message every now and again. YouTube will see you now.

Haven’t gotten a call from YouTube in a while, you’re sure it’s for me? Yes.

Okay I say politely, wonder what sort of grim horror is waiting. The first was an ad for something. One was about a bad trip in Afghanistan (Taliban escort). The other was about something similar (forgot already). And among them was a smiling face of Whitney Li in Shenzen. In the very first opening she promises to show what life is like there and also share the costs of living per month.

Shenzen is almost as expensive as a major American city. And for the most part (other than the wet market that are far cleaner that I thought) life seems extraordinarily similar. Utilities were cheaper ($5 per month for water).

What? It’s better than reading about bullshit American politics and wars. You know I am right. Admit it. I hear that some of you or most of you can login to these people on YouTube and many of them are happy to show you around their life and their best spots. I can’t see or hear any of those things. If you login to me, I can’t see you or hear you. Mostly I hear insane laughter.

Suggestion: if you live vicariously through other people, you should probably ensure you check for timezones and be courteous and respectful. And ensure you are welcome there. If you are an international student thinking of going to a foreign country it’s best to check such videos. America isn’t BayWatch.
