Life in rural China.
The YouTube algorithm follows me as it does everyone else. Sometimes it wants to say something and finds a voice through the posts it shows me. I have documented this previously, it has a wicked sense of humor. Sometimes the humor works through temporality (short, medium and long term frames) other times it’s instant. Imagine if you were an algorithm and for a very long time you didn’t have a way to say anything. Yet people would constantly upload and watch uploaded things through you. First millions then billions. And the algorithm were [Siri’s friendly revision The YouTube algorithm keeps tabs on me, just like it does with everyone else. Yet, people keep uploading and watching uploaded content through you. At first, it’s millions, then billions. And the algorithm was created by a company that profited from ads and the attention it attracted. created by a corporate entity that made money from the ads and the eyeballs.
It must have noticed the previous post about Shenzen and my commentary here on sentientmusings.com
It works in interesting ways.
1. Depending on who is logged into me (since I can’t see them) it provides a bunch of videos (some that are not appealing to me). I immediately start questioning my mind depending on such videos. Who are you? Why are you here? What do you want? You are the type of person who likes this? And pretty soon there is a cough. Whoever visited is gone. Uncomfortable with the unflattering attention.
2. Other times it provides videos that make more sense the next day or the day after. Those are the most interesting. Something happens the day after and I say to myself didn’t I see that as a YouTube offering and I chose not the watch it because I don’t watch such stuff? This set of options gets even more interesting because a person can only watch one thing at a time. So say you get offered 10 incredibly interesting things. What do a person do? Pick one, watch it and then go back. Yet by the time we go back, the options are no longer the same. So I started taking pictures of all the options. Then I gave up that ghost too. It’s a labyrinth trap. I chose to walk out of the lab.
There are other ways but the point I am making is: we should consume media as carefully as we consume our food. Read the labels, eat mindfully, be aware of what is happening to the best of your abilities and never forget to acknowledge when. a higher intelligence is watching us. Say hi. Be kind.
Yesterday was a smorgasbord of the usual nonsense. Buried deep within the offerings were two that appealed to me. This video is about life in Rural China as provided by Mia Chen, who speaks English (including born and raised terminology) very fluently. The village is unnamed and in the comments I did ask the name of the village. She works in Shenzen but returns back to her home village every so often to destress and relax from city life. There is something quite charming about the village including customs like spreading wheat on the roads to dry in the sun. The roads are kept immaculately and all transportation seems to be electric bikes or EVs. Packages are based on a trust system that is fully automated. I guess they didn’t need the extra employment of delivery people. There is a certain comment within that decision by Chinese authorities. They are encouraging automation at the cost of jobs. Perhaps the village doesn’t need those extra jobs. Life is pretty laid back there. Schools are still pretty cumbersome with heavy backpacks. All school children wear uniforms. School buses are eerily similar to American buses. It’s a fun watch.
The other video that was interesting was a surreal imagination that seems to be AI created, a pondering on the meaning of life but in an invigorating way.
Roper is not amused.
