The Buzzing: A Ukrainian Perspective.

I live in Kyiv. In Obolon. We don't count days anymore, we count buzzes.
The app says 404 today. Then 500. Russia produces daily 404 'Shaheds' of different kinds. And the plans are to increase that... up to 1,000 drones a day. That was our commander-in-chief in January. Zelenskyy said the same: Russia is scaling back missile production and redirecting funds toward increasing drone production... plans to reach 600-800 drones in 2026, but their overall target is 1,000 drones per day.
We hit back because we have to make the numbers mean something. So yes, we hit Wildberries. Twenty warehouses since July 18th. The Russian app that is their Amazon. Is it civilian? Yes. Is it also how socks and Chinese radios get to a mobilization point in Rostov? Also yes. That's the math that keeps you up at 3am when the Shahed is over your building and you are wondering if your air defense has anything left.
Because we have the same problem they have. They make 500 cheap Shaheds at $20k. We need two to three interceptors for each one, putting the demand somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 interceptors daily just for Ukraine's own air space. A Patriot is $4 million. A NASAMS is $1 million. An interceptor drone we make is $2,000 but you need a factory that can make 6 to 7 million drones in one year to keep up. So we are both out of missiles, not because we didn't buy enough, but because we built a world where offense is cheap and defense is ruinously expensive, and that arithmetic is now the air we breathe.
My neighbor works in a drone workshop in a former furniture factory. Ten kids with soldering irons. They make 30 FPVs a day. Russia makes 1,000. Europe says they will help us make more. So we make more. They make more. Nobody makes more air defense because air defense requires chips and time and money we spent on the cheap offense.
And now we watch Wildberries burn on Telegram and our ports burn on Telegram, and both sides say "bringing the war home" like home wasn't already the war.
This is the threshold you asked about — the Russian in Tula and me here are asking the same question from opposite windows: when does economic warfare stop being pressure and start being the point? When we both decided that the warehouse with diapers and the port with grain are the same as a fuel depot because everything sustains something, we crossed it. We just didn't notice because it was quiet, just a buzzing at night and an app that says "rerouted" and another app that says "shot down 41 of 48" which means 7 got through.
My daughter asks why we hit a store. I say because they hit a store. She says that's not an answer. She is right. It's not an answer. It's the escalatory ladder. Each rung is cheaper than the last.
When there is no air defense left, everything is air defense.
