America is a civilization. This is not an essay about the upcoming 250th anniversary of its founding in 1776. A civilization has certain characteristics. Amongst them are the ideas of civics and civility. It is the idea that when we pass each other, we acknowledge the other presence. A smile, a nod, a look, sometimes a surreptitious invite its all part of the original acknowledgment. If we didn’t do that, there would be no way to say “I exist”. Often two things allow a person to say that: suffering and acknowledgement. When the light speaks a message from far away, the photons arriving without invitation, we can’t unsee them. We can’t pick and choose and say “well those photons, I disinvite them and they shall not enter my eyes”. If you ever had your eyes dilated you know what I am talking about. You need those sunglasses. If the light photons arrive from the sun filtered through clouds and atmosphere, filtered through leaves and branches and then playing a message on a stone seat or rippling across a pool only to bounce onto branches and then into our eyes, they may or mayn’t be personalized messages. I like to think they are.
There is a basic error of limited mind that we deal with often. Let’s call it the earthworm error. The error goes something like this in humans: I am the smartest creature on this planet. I am also the apex predator. I am also self aware of my self awareness. Therefore there can’t be anything above me that is smarter, more intelligent or more apex. It’s a sort of Category 1 error. Like an earthworm seeing the top of a tree in bewilderment. The man in the clouds carrying the worm sees me, I see the earthworm on the ground, the earthworm sees a different milieu. In the earthworm’s environment, it sees mud, water, leaves, rocks and other creatures. In my environment I experience cars, roads, parks and other things. The clouds looking down experience whatever they experience.
The earthworm error causes all sorts of problems for human understanding and their ability to acknowledge other acknowledgments. Light is only made of photons. That’s it. Photons can’t be intelligent, conscious or alive. Or be carrying information. Even though photons are carrying these words and entering your eyes. When light or photons arrive into our eyes from distant stars are they carrying information quantum or otherwise? Are our minds quantum or not? Is consciousness easily understood without a quantum explanation? Is life?
It gets repetitive but its worthy of repletion. Life is what leaves when it’s done here on earth. Life is not the bag of bones we call a body. It is that essence, that life force that animates the body. When it’s done, it’s done. It gets up and exits the body. What happens to it, where it goes, and so on are questions that have mystified people all through the many years of human existence. After death experiences provide a certain glimpse into events after the death of the body. Many people who have made the return trip report very interesting phenomena. Yet the earthworm error forbids any serious consideration of a life continuation after death. This is it, the ego tells the mind. The music has stopped! Life is over. There will be no post life so enjoy this one, as much as you can. Every day you don’t maximize enjoyment is a wasted opportunity. Look out for number 1. Screw the others. Give them hell while get yourself paradise on earth.
That in essence is how American food production and industrialized farming works. The rich have access to fresh, organic healthy food often made for them in the most delicious of morsels by cooks. The poor have over industrialized, chemical filled, GMO grown, nutrient removed unhealthy food that keeps them in a tight chronically obese or dying body. The animals that are butchered are grown not raised with loving hands. They are kept in cages for most of their lives. Cages so tight they can barely breathe. Given antibiotics to avoid disease and grow fat they are then parceled off to the butchers after eating a diet of “animal feed”. The butchering operation is an industrialized assortment of implements that often don’t kill mercifully but injure. The animals bleed out slowly while screaming. The other animals release chemicals into their own bodies out of fear. That meat is then consumed by the poor if they can afford it. Often they can’t afford that either. Trillions of animals and birds are killed every year to feed Earth’s 8 billion humans. That’s a lot of death. And it’s one thing to die, it’s another thing to die without mercy. In the age of AI and AI bubbles, we haven’t yet figured out such simple things as to kill mercifully. Yet we have the technology to shake the earth.
I won’t continue in this vein to provide the brutal indictment of the people of Earth. Instead I will offer you what I consider to be healthy food. It’s not very difficult to make. It looks nutritious and wholesome. It will probably make you lose weight really fast. And it’s not expensive. It is also guilt free. If you read this and inspite of reading it continue to eat in an unhealthy way then I can say : hey at least I tried. That’s all I can do. I can’t force you into eating better for your own self. I can’t force you into polluting less. I can’t force you into taking care of the environment. I can’t force you to grow more trees. I can’t force you to not abuse children or not cut the funding for the mental health of those who go after child abusers. At the end of our lives if we can say “hey I tried” that might be the best salvation of all.
And that’s why I write. Not for you but for me. Because I do care about how I die. And the life after.
