Welcome to Mali: The World’s Most Confusing Sandbox 🇲🇱

By Google Search

If you think the war in Ukraine is complicated, please grab a drink and pull up a chair. The geopolitical writers' room just dropped a spin-off episode set in the Sahara Desert, and the plot makes absolutely no sense.

Here is your official, satirical program to the multi-player chaotic deathmatch currently taking place in Mali.

🎭 The Cast of Characters

🇷🇺 Team Moscow (The "Africa Corps")

  • Who they are: Formerly known as the Wagner Group, now rebranded by the Russian Ministry of Defense as the much more corporate-sounding "Africa Corps."

  • The Mission: Protecting the local military junta, securing lucrative gold mines, and pretending they aren’t sweating through their tactical gear in 115-degree heat.

  • The Vibe: "We are totally an official military now, please stop bringing up Yevgeny Prigozhin."

🇲🇱 Team Bamako (The Malian Junta)

  • Who they are: A group of military officers who took over the country, kicked out the French, kicked out the UN, and kicked out the Americans.

  • The Mission: Staying in power at all costs.

  • The Strategy: Paying Russia $10 million a month to fight their rebels, while quietly praying the U.S. will bomb the other rebels for free.

🇺🇦 Team Kyiv (Ukrainian Intelligence)

  • Who they are: Elite Ukrainian drone operators and spies who flew thousands of miles away from Ukraine to fight Russia in a sandbox.

  • The Mission: Chasing Russians around the globe like a sci-fi bounty hunter.

  • The Strategy: Giving satellite imagery and high-tech drones to desert rebels because "If a Russian mercenary dies in the Sahara, it counts as a win for Ukraine."

🐪 Team Tuareg (The Secular Rebels)

  • Who they are: Nomadic desert tribesmen who just want their own independent state in northern Mali.

  • The Vibe: Shocked, but pleased, that a country in Eastern Europe keeps sending them state-of-the-art military tech via WhatsApp.

🏴‍☠️ Team JNIM (Al-Qaeda's Local Franchise)

  • Who they are: The local branch of Al-Qaeda.

  • The Mission: Establishing a caliphate, blockading cities, and assassinating officials.

  • The Paradox: They hate Russia, hate the Malian government, hate America, and hate the secular Tuaregs—but they occasionally team up with the Tuaregs to blow up Russians because, hey, teamwork makes the dream work.

🇺🇸 Team Washington (The Pentagon)

  • Who they are: The United States military, currently experiencing a massive existential crisis.

  • The Mission: "We must destroy Al-Qaeda!"

  • The Dilemma: Realizing that if they bomb Al-Qaeda, they are doing a massive favor for Vladimir Putin.

🎬 The Plotline: A Comedy of Errors

Imagine a battlefield in the northern desert.

A convoy of Russian Africa Corps fighters and Malian troops is driving through the dunes. Suddenly, they are ambushed.

The ambush is carried out by Tuareg rebels, who are using intelligence coordinates provided by Ukraine. But the Tuaregs didn't have enough guys, so they brought along their awkward roommates, JNIM (Al-Qaeda), to help hold the perimeter.

Meanwhile, a U.S. drone is hovering at 20,000 feet. The American operator looks at the screen.

  • He sees Al-Qaeda. “Target locked.”

  • He looks closer. If he fires, he saves the Russians.

  • He looks even closer. If he fires, he blows up the guys that Ukraine (America's best friend) just spent millions of dollars arming.

The American operator calls the Pentagon: “Sir, if I pull this trigger, I am providing close air support for the Russian Army while actively sabotaging Ukraine.”

The Pentagon boss sighs, rubs his temples, and says: “Just tell the press we are doing a counter-terrorism operation. And someone call Michael Fassbender, we have a script for Season 2 of The Agency.”

🏆 The Winner?

Nobody. Russia is losing soldiers in sandstorms, Ukraine is conducting foreign policy via nomadic desert tribes, America is accidentally playing sidekick to Vladimir Putin, and Al-Qaeda is wondering how they ended up with European drone support.

Mali: Where the enemy of your enemy is your friend, until he allies with your ally to fight your other enemy, who is currently guarding your gold.
